Uwe Wernekinck

Uwe Wernekinck, PhD, MSW, LSW is a former lab member who now works as an adult trauma therapist with the Center for Family Safety and Healing at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. As an EMDR trained clinician, he provides evidence-based and trauma-responsive services to survivors of intimate partner violence. In addition to his clinical role, he also serves as an adjunct instructor in the OSU College of Social Work. Dr. Wernekinck’s scholarship used qualitative research methods to better understand the intersection of sexual trauma and addiction for male survivors of childhood sexual abuse. His work advocates for the need to acknowledge the prevalence and impact of sexual trauma among male survivors and to view substance use as an effective yet maladaptive coping skill. He has published his work in high impact journals such as the Journal of Child Sexual Abuse and presented his research both nationally and internationally. Dr. Wernekinck holds a B.Sc. (2012) and M.Sc. (2014) in Psychology from Ruhr University Bochum, Germany and he obtained both his MSW (2020) and PhD (2024) from The Ohio State University.
